As we start the month of November, it is important to look back at our 47 classroom observations reflecting specifically around Domains 2 and 3. Looking at the time in which we visit classrooms, it is obvious that we need to do a better job of getting into classrooms during the last 20 minutes of class so we can highlight practices happening during that time frame as well.
My visit occurred
First 20 minutes of class | 20 | 43% |
20-40 minute mark | 23 | 49% |
Last 20 minutes of class | 4 | 9% |
There is much to celebrate across the Classroom Environment Domain as the majority of our practices are quite consistently in the proficient range. This is not to be taken for granted as establishing a culture for learning and effectively managing procedures, students and space is critical to ensure optimal learning conditions.
2a: Creating an Environment of Respect and Rapport
2b: Establishing a Culture for Learning
2c: Managing Classroom Procedures
2d: Managing student behavior
2e: Organizing physical space
In Domain 3, Instruction, there are some areas in which we can do a better job at becoming more effective with our practices. Our questioning and discussion techniques (3b) continue to be an area we need to focus on. Questions of high quality cause students to think and reflect, deepen their understanding, and test their ideas against those of their classmates. If questions are at a high level, but only a few students participate in the discussion, the teacher's performance on the component cannot be judged to be at a high level. For students themselves to formulate high level questions, they must learn how to do so. When discussions happen in class, students should be able to talk with one another without mediation by the teacher.
Using assessment in instruction (3d) is another area to reflect upon. Assessment of student learning plays an important role in teaching. It is essential that students know the criteria for assessment. At it's highest level, students themselves have a hand in articulating the criteria. A teacher’s skill in eliciting evidence of student understanding is one of the true marks of expertise. This is not a hit-or-miss effort, but is planned carefully in advance.

3b: Questioning and Discussion Techniques
3c: Engaging Students in Learning
3d: Using Assessment in Instruction
3e: Demonstrating flexibility and responsiveness
There are classroom videos available in the LEARN section of Teachscape. It might be useful to dig in to these modules with one another in order to help increase our levels of efficacy and performance in these areas. Lets continue to grow our strong practices together.
